On the first reading simply read the "Which way . . ?" text and play the game of locating the animals.
Explain that the "YOU ARE HERE" arrow shows where we are on the map. When you ask, "Which way to the tigers?" you will discover that there is more than one way to get there. Which is the shortest way?
When you turn the page, the arrow points to the tigers. This time we have to find a way to the gorillas.
Point out that one of the children on the cover is in a wheelchair. So we might need to figure out the shortest way to the gorillas without steps.
On a second reading of the book, point out the key. Ask children to find examples in the map of each item in the key.
Invent puzzles to solve using the key, such as:
It's lunch time. We are at the butterfly house. Where is the nearest place to buy lunch?
The key includes a scale. You can decide whether it shows 10 yards or 10 metres. You might continue your question:
Now we have bought our lunch. Let's eat it watching the kangaroos. How far is that?
Point out the compass rose in the lower left corner. Invent puzzles to solve using the cardinal points (north, south, east, and west), such as:
I am an animal starting with P.
I have a large tail.
I'm north of the seal and east of the camel.
What am I? (A peacock)
This book introduces most of the features of a map. If you want to extend this to using map coordinates, you can do so with the e-book version.
